  • Why can I not eat sweets anymore ☹

Since having my brace it seems like there so many things I cant do anymore. It is rather depressing. I accepted that I would have to lay off the toffee and that rock was a no no but I am also not able to eat foam and jelly sweets. At the end of the day they are soft so I don’t see the problem. I wish I had gone for the Invisalign now but my grandparents were paying and insisted that I have a proper metal brace because these are better than new stuff apparently. Obviously I cannot argue with that but it is still annoying. It is controlling so much of what I do!

    Hello,
    Thank you for your post.
Soft and chewy sweets still have a stickiness to them that could cause damage to your braces. Anything that could get stuck in the wires and fixtures could cause a potential problem for your treatment. If the brace becomes damaged, then this could end up adding weeks or months to the length of your treatment. Plus, I doubt that your orthodontist will be very happy about it when they have specifically said that this type of food is off limits while you are wearing your orthodontic appliance. However, try and see this as a positive thing as too many sweets are certainly not good for your teeth and the more you resist this type of food the less likely you are to want it in the long run. Having a brace is only temporary so try to focus on the benefits you will gain from temporarily not eating some of the foods you enjoy. Good luck to you.
