  • Is it actually surgery?

I have been informed that I need to have a root canal surgery on one of my teeth. I have never heard of this before and know not what it is. Is it actually a surgical procedure and will I need to go to hospital and be under a full anesthetic. I feel like this could be a big thing and I have only had one operation before and I was very young then. Feel anxious about it since I got the news. Is this very serious? I need to know more please so I can prepare myself for the ordeal of it all. Thanks for your advice.

    Thank you for your post.
Root canal surgery is just another term for a root canal treatment. The procedure is slightly invasive, but it is not actually classed as a surgical procedure and would be performed by a dentist or Endodontist rather than an Oral Surgeon. Hopefully, you will feel better when I tell you that it is a very common procedure and hundreds of people in the UK undergo the treatment every day. A root canal treatment is needed to clear out infected tooth pulp from inside the tooth. Once this infected pulp is removed the tooth is cleaned and disinfected then sealed up with a filling. If it is not completed, then patients will end up losing their tooth in the end. Therefore, it is an essential procedure. If you are still feeling anxious about it, then you could ask your dentist about dental sedation to help you relax and feel less stressed. Best of luck to you.
