I only have two wisdom that have come through in the past four or five years and they have been on up until now – a bit painful but nothing I cant handle with paracetamol. However they now seem to have decided that they are going to become a lot more painful and sometimes paracetamol makes very little difference to the teeth and how they feel. I can’t chew at all because they really hurt at the back of my mouth and they are starting to throb occasionally, which is seriously worrying. For someone who has never had to deal with toothache before it is difficult for me to handle this and I worry that they are seriously infected beneath the gums. I have asked around and a lot of people said that they had something similar and most said it was not a problem in the long run but others said they had to get their wisdom teeth removed because it was just too painful and not getting any better. I am worried that this is the case with my teeth and I will have to get dental surgery to have them removed. I am worrying that this is going to be difficult and I might have to take some time off work. What is the first thing I should do here? Do you think my teeth will have to come out from the way they are feeling?

Hello,
Thanks for your post.
I’m sorry that you are having trouble with your wisdom teeth but the fact is that wisdom teeth are very often troublemakers! They can become stuck underneath the gums, they can grow in twisted or at an incorrect angle, or they may not erupt at all because there is not enough room on the jaw bone. They can also be difficult to extract, because of their size and position, so most dentists would chose to leave them alone wherever possible, otherwise they may cause bleeding or unnecessary pain and distress to the patient – furthermore, the extraction of a large tooth could cause some nerve injury or damage to the neighbouring tooth, if not done correctly. I think the best thing to do would be to visit your dentist to have the wisdom teeth x-rayed; this could just be natural discomfort that comes from the large molars erupting from the jaw line – teething pains – or it could be something more serious, like infection, but you won’t know until you speak to a dentist. I don’t think you should necessarily jump the gun here and be overly concerned before you know what’s what, but it’s definitely worth checking them out, obviously.A Guide to Wisdom Tooth Pain While pain and discomfort are extremely common among people whose wisdom teeth are beginning to erupt, the reasons behind the feeling can often by far from normal and, in many cases, could require immediate treatment from an emergency dentist. Although this growth process has been referred to as a... Read More...
