After having my tooth cleaned out with a root canal it is looking likely I will need to have a crown but I have not been told why? My practitioner said so but did not explain any further as to why. What would be the need for a crown. I thought you only had crowns on teeth that have had decay. My tooth has not had this do I’m here feeling confused. Does this mean my tooth has been decayed. Why would my dentist not have told me. I am now worried.

Why would I need a crown?

Hello,
Thank you for your post.
Usually the reason for needing a dental crown after root canal treatment is either to strengthen the tooth or protect it from further infection (or a combination of both). When a tooth undergoes a root canal the living pulp is removed from inside. Therefore, there ceases to be a blood supplying entering and leaving the tooth. This can cause the tooth to become brittle and become more susceptible to breakage. A crown can be fitted over the top to form a shield around the remaining tooth and give it strength and stability. Especially when eating. Also, sealing the tooth off with a crown can help to keep the tooth infection free going forward. In your case it is unlikely to be due to tooth decay, but more to do with the above (although the reason for needing a root canal could be due to decay, this is something you will need to clarify with your dentist). Going forward do ask your dentist if you are unsure about anything, I am sure they will be more than happy to explain things if you have any questions. Best of luck to you.
